Kappa Alpha Psi

Fraternity Origins

A concise, modern presentation of the fraternity’s founding context, enduring ideals and expansion.

The Origins

More than a century of achievement.

Kappa Alpha Psi emerged from the experience of Black collegiate men who sought fellowship, opportunity and a disciplined path toward honorable achievement.

At Indiana University, Elder Watson Diggs, Byron K. Armstrong and eight other founders established the organization in 1911. Their vision was national in scope: unite men of culture, patriotism and honor while cultivating leadership, scholarship and service.

Founding principle: Achievement is not merely celebrated; it is practiced through preparation, courage, fellowship and public responsibility.
